With the new iPhone app you can mow the lawn without even being at home. Any Automower® robotic lawnmower equipped with a GPS Communication Unit can be remotely started and stopped, as well as being tracked on your iPhone screen. The app also has installation movies, a buying guide and FAQs.

We all want a well-kept lawn, but few are willing to invest the time needed. With the help of Automower® we made life a little easier for house owners. With the iPhone app we take gardening one step further. With its help you take control of your lawn as easily as making a phone call, says Stefan Axelsson, Business Development Manager at Husqvarna.

The GPS Communication Unit is available for most of the Automower® range and from 2011 it comes as standard for the 260 ACX model. The GPS Communications Unit also enables GPS theft tracker and SMS alert.

1. Clean up, blow away and rake

Autumn and winter tend to lead to a lot of leaves, twigs, pinecones and other debris. Step one is to clear away everything that’s gathered, above all to give the lawn and the flowerbeds a chance to recover. The occasional leaf doesn’t constitute any danger, but piles or layers of leaves can lead to the grass moulding or decaying. Use a leaf blower or a rake.

Leaves and all other leftover organic materials are an excellent addition to the compost and can later be returned to the garden as an organic energy boost.

2. Clear away weeds and aerate the soil

Get rid of any weeds as early as possible, before the sun gives it energy to start growing. Also be sure to cut away withered leaves and grass from cultivated parts of the garden. Be mindful not to tear up the withered parts of plants you want to keep when you’re working with them. This might damage their roots.

Furthermore, the soil needs to be loosened. This makes it possible for the oxygen to reach the roots of the plants – and at the same time it gives a better-looking flowerbed! In smaller beds you’ll get by with hand tools but if you’re working with larger areas, a rotary cultivator is the way to go.

3. Prune the trees

If you have fruit trees, they need pruning in order to be healthy and carry fruit. The pruning should be performed during spring, but be careful not to do it too early as the incisions can dry out if the temperature goes below zero. Use proper tools to achieve a good result and make the workload easier.

A fruit tree is pruned in five steps:

1. Remove dead branches, sometimes this might be the only thing you have to do

2. Remove crossing branches, branches that rub against each other

3. Remove shoots and branches that point straight upwards

4. Remove any branches pointing inwards, towards the tree’s trunk

5. If needed – thin out some more

4. Trim the hedges

The way to get a good-looking hedge always starts with the hedge cutters. Hedges with leaves should preferably be trimmed during the winter or early spring. Conifers are better trimmed during the growing period, one time early spring and once more in the middle of the summer.

5. Cut and scarify the lawn

The lawn needs time to recover after the winter. Remember not to cut the grass too short the first couple of times. With a grass level of 5-9 cm you will have a fine, sustainable lawn, which is ready to be used.

Another trick to achieve a healthy-looking lawn is to scarify it. This should be done when the grass has started to grow for real (after cutting/mowing 1-2 times), but before the ground has dried up and hardened. The scarifying has several benefits: It pulls up the moss and it also pulls up the dead materials stuck in the surface layers and provides the grass roots with oxygen. An aerated surface layer will keep the moss away and give the grass the needed energy to take up the fight with moss and weed.

To simulate real arborist working conditions, the training center outside Ipswich now hosts The Husqvarna Tree – a metal tree that measures 6.3 meters where you can mount tree branches of different sizes and shapes.

The height training center is owned and managed by BTS (Broadleaf Tree Specialists) and is located near Ipswich. The training center also facilitates academic training and a wide range of different chainsaw related courses.

Husqvarna and Jonsered chainsaws triumph in World Logging Championship

The WLC’s rules state that contestants must only use one chainsaw for all five disciplines during the championship. The chainsaws are thoroughly inspected by the judges before and during the competition.

The winner of the WLC 2010, Andres Olesk from Estornia secured his gold medal using a Jonsered CS 2171. First runner up, Jean Michel Petitqueux accredits his success to a Husqvarna 576XP.

Counting the top three results in the four sawing disciplines (tree felling, bucking by combined cuts, precision bucking, limbing) chainsaws from Husqvarna group outnumbered the competition. Nine of the twelve medals were won by products manufactured by Husqvarna Group. Particularly noticeable was the success in limbing, where Husqvarna products won all medals – gold, silver and bronze.

The junior participants really are the future of professional logging. WLC is a perfect forum for young loggers to get experience and expert advices in their process of becoming real professionals. Not only do they get educated in how to be precise and effective, they also achieve excellence in logging safety and ergonomics.

As the seniors in competition, the young contestans are using Husqvarna 372XP andHusqvarna 576XP

The 372 XP was launched worldwide in 2000. A true professional saw in the larger mid-size class, it was an evolution from the model 371 XP. The 372 XP became very appreciated for its engine characteristics. Quick acceleration and high power spread over a wide rpm range is combined with low weight and great ergonomics. This was very suitable for pro loggers all over the world. A sign of this is that this machine has several gold and other medals in the World Logging Championships over the years. Probably more medals than any other single model!

The 576 XP was launched late 2008, an advanced saw for demanding professional use. It is an evolution of the model 575 XP, which was the first X-Torq pro saw on the world market. A well kept lawn is appreciated by most homeowners, but not necessarily the work, noise and time consumption that come along with it. There is a definite interest in finding a long term solution. During the last five years, the sale of Husqvarna Automower® has almost five folded in Sweden.
